Fountain Valley, Ca - Dec 18-22 -
This Years IRF Junior World Championships held at Los Caballeros in sunny California were by far the best ever for Alaska.. Of the 9 Alaskan Kids who participated, 6 managed to bring home Medals to include 1 World Title, In this very Prestigious Tournament. This year there were Teams from 11 Countries including 14 Kids from Ireland.

This was a doubles only tournament in the Men's Open Jesse Keaveny & Jon Munger defeated Tony Piper & Christer Linden 15-8, 2-15, 11-1 while Robby Gunther & Mike Phillps defeated Felix Martinez & Brandon Cuaresma 15-14, 15-10 to take 3rd place.

We say goodbye and honor the spirit of one of our long time "Racquetball Family Member's "Joyce Melchert". After a year long battle with breast cancer, and with Family members surrounding her, Joyce passed on July 14, 2001. The Alaska Club in Anchorage has decided to honor Joyce's life and commitment to racquetball by naming this tournament "The Joyce Melchert Memorial Racquetball Tournament".

Once again Alaska was very well represented at the US National High Schools, Ryan Kofoid of Dimond High went 5 tough rounds in the Boys Gold Singles to equal the best preformance by an Alaskan player in Singles (Round of 16). Ryan teamed up with his long time partner Ross Amundson to claim the Bronze Medal in Boys Doubles. Cliff Caldwell, Justin Nordine, and first timer Brittany Peck all played some very tough racquetball matches.

#2 seed Jesse Keaveny & Jon Munger took the Men's Open with an 11-9 tiebreaker over #1 Dave Sivigliano & Jeff Oathout of Fairbanks. Jonathan also teamed up with his Sister Stephanie to win the Mixed Open over Michelle Poage & Keith Boice.

Nine Alaska racquetball players made the trip to Memphis for this years US Open Nick Arturo, Linda Bateman, Jesse & Tim Keaveny, Debra Kinn, Ryan Kofoid, Leo Kouremetis, And Jon & Stephanie Munger. Nick Arturo also played in the ProAm mixed doubles for St Jude, He was teamed up with #5 ranked Womens Pro Rhonda Rajsich from Phoenix, Az. together they won three rounds and lost in the semis to #15 Javier Moreno and his partner 15-13. Both players were awarded bronze medals for their great efforts.
